Pot-stickers and why my kids still surprise me

IMG_0677

When I have a hankering for something ‘culinary’ from the past I just have to make it, even when the kids are hungry and I’m in a rush. My sister and I used to eat pot-stickers, with mind alteringly hot chilli sauce, and watch back-to-back movies when we were in or 20’s and could sit around all day recovering from the night before. Monday night, 5pm and I’m making the delicious stuffing for the dumplings; pork mince, garlic, red onion, ginger, shitake mushrooms, soy sauce and red vinegar. . . . → Read More: Pot-stickers and why my kids still surprise me

Friday night nachos

Last Friday night my guest list kept growing. We all have friends with kids that go to different schools, so it’s hard to co-ordinate catch ups because everyone’s kids’ seem to have a different activity on each night. Having the same night free is a rare occurrence. Which is why last Friday night I invited more and more girlfriends and kids until the number had reached 17! . . . → Read More: Friday night nachos

Secret kitchen behaviour

vegetables for bottom drawer soup

I think everybody fondly remembers the Sex in the City episode titled ‘Secret Single Behaviour’. Carrie ate saltine crackers in her underwear, standing in the kitchen reading fashion mags; Charlotte stared at her pores in a magnifying mirror; Miranda watched infomercials whilst wearing isotoner gloves with her hands slathered in moisturizer and Samantha had no secret single behavior because she was too busy having sex. Well … Kirst and I were hanging out with the kids last Sunday and I decided to make ‘bottom draw soup’. . . . → Read More: Secret kitchen behaviour

Healthy chicken wraps

I initially had this dish at a friend’s house as an easy Friday night dinner. Vicki thinks she got the idea somewhere from the hunky Curtis Stone, but who knows? Curtis may just have been on her mind! Anyway, if he did influence this dish he should be given a medal as my tribe have adapted this every week since for a healthy, fuss-free family dinner. . . . → Read More: Healthy chicken wraps

Pasta bake prejudice

Pasta bake with a crunchy top

The definition of prejudice is roughly:” an adverse judgment or opinion formed beforehand or without knowledge or examination of the facts”. I admit I did exactly that when I was at work the other day and was asked to make a ‘pasta bake’. My reaction was reeking of snobbery and superiority. The name ‘Pasta bake’ smacks of TV dinner trays and trackie dacks, which as it turns out is exactly what I love about them! . . . → Read More: Pasta bake prejudice

The weeknight dinner conundrum (oh, and butter chicken!)

Simply serve the butter chicken in the pot you served it, with rice and salad

Weeknight dinners can really cause some angst; on the one hand we want them to be quick, easy and nutritious. But … on the other we want something different (because cooking the same thing all the time can become mind-numbingly boring) we want to experiment with new ingredients and introduce new flavours. But we don’t want to spend too much time looking for said ingredients or make something new to have the kids go: “Eeeewwww”. . . . → Read More: The weeknight dinner conundrum (oh, and butter chicken!)
